The Development Of Party Politics In Taiwan After The Political Transition

With the continuous deepening of the democratization,Taiwan’s political transition has gradually become clear afterits period of throes, and the development of political partiesin its island has also embarked on a new stage. Taiwan has mainlyexperienced a period of Kuomintang one-party dominance, theKuomintang (KMT), the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP), theKMT, the DPP and the New Party period of party competition anda gradual transition period of two-party competition afterpolitical transition, and has gradually tended to be stable.This is a result of the interaction among many factors outsidethe island. However, the deepening of the practice of politicaldemocratization indicates that the realization of democracyrequires not only the support of the socio-economic and cultural conditions, but also needs the support of whole system.Political parties are the main support of the democratic system,and democratic system can be able to maintain and develop onlydepending on the institutionalized political parties and partypolitics. The political parties and party politics which havehigh levels of institutionalization, has been treated as anecessary prerequisite to enhance the running of democraticrules. The level of institutionalization play an essential rolein operational efficiency of party politics, the establishmentof a stable and orderly political environment, as well as thepromotion of democratized process. And its main objective isto form a benign political party system, which is a stable,widely recognized and orderly political activity pattern ofpolitical parties,in order to promote the institutionalizationof party politics, the operation of regularization, and tofurther promote the process of democratization.This paper attempts to study from the aspect of theinstitutional theory, aiming to measure the level ofinstitutionalization of the major political parties and therelationship of the inter-party at the base of combing thecourse of development of party politics in Taiwan and using theinstitutional theory, and finally analyzing the main factors of impacting the development of party politics. Through theabove research, it will provide reference for the developmentof Taiwan’s party politics in the future as well as the processof democratization.In the research of the contents, this paper will be dividedinto four parts: The first part briefly combs the course ofdevelopment of the party system in Taiwan after the politicaltransition, according to the time of party system development,it will be divided into four stages: the period of KMT one-partydominance, the KMT, the DPP and the New Party period of partycompetition, tend to be stable period of the two-party systemtransition period as well as the two-party competition, so thatthis part lays the research foundation for the full text. Thesecond part uses the four standards of the institutional theoryof Huntington to analyze the relationship between the mainpolitical parties in Taiwan, such as the Kuomintang (KMT) andthe Democratic Progressive Party(DPP), as well as thedevelopment of the relationship between the two parties. Thethird part analyzes the main factors affecting the developmentof party politics in Taiwan, including the development ofsocio-economic factors, the factors of the constitutionalreform, the constraints of the electoral system and the impact of Taiwan’s political and cultural factors.In the research method of the history of science, adherenceto the dialectical methods, scientific, objective analysismethod, through literature analysis, descriptive studies andcomparative research methods, while drawing on politicalscience, sociology and other interdisciplinary methods ofanalysis, a comprehensive, integrated discussion of thedevelopment of party politics in Taiwan after the politicaltransition.
