A Historical Research On Contemporary French Immigration

With the explosion of oil crisis in the Middle East in1970s, immigration increasingly became a prominent social problem in France. Since then, policies adopted by French society towards immigrants totally changed. Under this social background, French historian G e rard Noiriel created a bottom-up reseach mode/episteme. With creative research perspectives "identity","national country" and "historical memory", he explores a historical perspective research on French immigrants and it brings practical meanings to understanding prominent problems in French immigration. Different from French assimilation policy, Gerard Noiriel proposes that immigrants keep their original cultural characteristics while integrating into the French society. Through his constant attention to marginalized immigrants, G erard Noiriel intents to introduce a new perspective to French public, media and politicians to change people’s die-hard hatred towards immigrants so as to realize concern for the whole society.
