With the society rapidly progressing and the economy quickly developing, more and more people choose to use vehicles, and many vehicle location and communication terminals come out. But many current terminals use the design concept that separate the GPS module from the GPRS module. Thus makes terminals look much larger and cause the rise of failure rate. Based on the above consideration, this paper uses GPS/GPRS two-in-one module to make the vehicle terminal smaller. After that the terminal is wanted to meet some special requirements, such as put it in hidden areas, have an alarm button and can realize one-way voice communication.On the basis of some key technology’s study and considering the users’ requirements, this paper used the embedded system technology to design the vehicle monitoring system which is based on GPS/GPRS. The terminal has many extra functions except for single positioning, and this makes it possible for users to position and communicate with the vehicles anywhere and anytime. This paper firstly completed the overall system structure and function planning. Secondly, this design includes both software and hardware. On the hardware side, this paper gives the reason why the author used the chosen components and how to draw the circuit drawing and how to make the drawing to PCB format and turn it into the circuit board finally. On the software side, the author completed the flow and program design. In the end, the author tested all the performances of every aspect of the vehicle location and communication terminal. The basic work procedure of the terminal as follows: the ARM microprocessor disposes the GPS data after receiving, and sends it to the monitoring center via the GPRS. The monitoring center can receive and save the vehicles’ status information and also can send commands to the terminal. User can interact with the terminal by means of the SMS.After testing, this design is proved to be steady working, precise positioning, and reliable data transferring. In case of losing the external power, the standby battery can work steadily for an extended period. In general, this design has obtained the expected result.
