As an important part of the vehicle suspension, the stabilizer bar can produce the anti-roll force through its own torsional deformation, in order to prevent vehicle rollover. For the heavy-duty vehicles, their stability limit is low, more likely to induced rollover. However, the torsional stiffness of traditional passive Stabilizer bar is constant, so that it cannot deal with the frequently changing rollover conditions.In this paper, taking a heavy-duty vehicle as an objective, focus on the impact of its roll stability. First, the multi-body vehicle dynamics model is established in ADAMS software, and three test conditions of steady-state turn, J-turn steering and fishhook are used to analyze roll stability of this vehicle. The simulation results show that the heavy-duty vehicle stability is needed to be improved, so in order to improve the roll stability of this vehicle, an active stabilizer bar is proposed. The active stabilizer bar system consists of a control unit, a variety of sensors, actuators and stabilizer bar etc.. Then for the active stabilizer bar system, the mathematical model is established, and then develops appropriate control strategies in MATLAB, based on vehicle driving conditions and operating parameters associated passive stabilizer bar. Finally, co-simulation by ADAMS and MATLAB, validates the feasibility of the control strategy about active stabilizer bar system, and under the same conditions, compared roll stability of the vehicle with rigid passive, flexible passive and active stabilizer bar installed.The results shows that the control strategy is feasible, and the active stabilizer bar system can improve the roll stability of the heavy vehicle well. Compared with the traditional passive stabilizer bar, the active stabilizer bar system can change the active torque according to the roll degree, to reduce body roll and improve safety. While the vehicle is driving normally, the control system can separate right and left ends of the bar, and make the manipulation lighter.
