Portal crane is one of the main port handling equipment. With the increasing scale of industrial production and more frequent exchange of goods, the portal crane is becoming larger and more complex and its freight volume increases much more. In this background, it requires higher accuracy and safety of the crane control and higher reaction speed, stability and reliability during the operation process which puts forward higher requirements to the portal crane.PLC evolved from a variety of technologies including automatic control technology, computer technology and communication technology. It’s applicable to all kinds of industrial control fields. PLC has many advantages such as small size, rich and powerful functions, high reliability and being adapted to the harsh working conditions. By using inverter to adjust the speed, the portal crane will have wide speed range and good low-speed performance which will also increase motor efficiency and improve the stability and reliability of the crane operation.This paper is aimed to research the design of portal crane control system by using PLC and inverter, in order to meet current operation requirements and meet the needs of future development of port facilities. At first, the structure and operating principles of hoisting mechanism, luffing mechanism, rotating mechanism and walking mechanism of portal crane are introduced and the technical parameters are discussed. Secondly, the overall design solution is accomplished by analyzing design elements of the four mechanisms and the major controlled objects. Then, by choosing PLC as the control center, combining with inverter and fieldbus technology, the hardware platform of the whole control system is built. At last, based on the hardware platform, the software of control system was designed by using CX-Programmer, and the flowcharts of hoisting mechanism and walking mechanism and the detailed analysis of programs are given. And the methods to improve the reliability of the control system were studied and analyzed. But the actual project is not yet implemented, so the research was done without specific implementation.
