Objective:To analyze903metabolic syndrome cases from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to refer and classify metabolic syndrome by concept and theory of TCM syndrome based on research results; to conclude the principal symptoms of each kind of TCM syndrome; to analyze the potential etiology, pathogenesis and the relationship among them, to provide basis for clinic treatment.Methods:Based on the "Investigation Table of TCM". The cross-sectional study was conducted in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province with the uniformed investigation table.903MS cases were collected with212healthy donors as the control group. General information, individual habits and customs, medical and family history, TCM symptoms and physical signs were surveyed, some clinical parameters were examined. SPSS18.0software were used. The statistical analysis was processed by a series of algorithms:frequency analysis, univariate analysis, cluster analysis.Results:According to the results of frequency analysis and univariate analysis,33TCM symptoms and physical signs and12tongue and pulse were selected to be analysed by cluster analysis. Based on these45TCM symptoms, to classify903MS cases by K-means cluster. Six factor-model gained more preference. They are named by terminology of TCM syndromes. Their major symptoms were concluded as follows:(1)Syndrome of splenic asthenia and damp abundance:the principal symptoms including fatigued spirit and lack of strength, short of breath, heavy cumbersome limbs, dizziness, big belly, slippery and stringlike pulse, enlarged tongue.(2) Syndrome of stagnated heat of liver and stomach:the principal symptoms including thirst with linking for fluids, fussy and irritable, red in the face, sleeplessness, dreaminess, red tongue with yellow coating, rapid stringlike pulse.(3) Syndrome of intermingled phlegm and blood stasis:the principal symptoms including heavy head as if wrapped, distention and fullness in the stomach, vexing heat in chest, sense of suppression in the chest, numbness of limbs, heavy cumbersome head and body, dark purple tongue, sublingual vein varicose.(4) Syndrome of yang deficiency of spleen and kidney:the principal symptoms including dizziness, fatigued spirit and lack of strength, intolerance of coldness and cold limbs, ringing in ears, dysacousis, forgetful, white coating of the tongue, weak pulse.(5)Syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin:the principal symptoms including fatigued spirit and lack of strength, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, short of breath, hot falsh, spontaneous perspiration, night sweat, feverish sensation over the five centers, red tongue with yellow coating, thready rapid pulse.(6) Syndrome of deficiency of both yin and yang:the principal symptoms including ringing in the ears, fatigued spirit and lack of strength, intolerance of coldness and cold limbs, forgetful, hot falsh, night sweat, weak and rapid pulse.Conclusion:According to semiology research results, the TCM syndromes of MS are classified with six types:syndrome of splenic asthenia and damp abundance, syndrome of stagnated heat of liver and stomach, syndrome of intermingled phlegm and blood stasis, syndrome of yang deficiency of spleen and kidney, syndrome of deficiency of both qi and yin, syndrome of deficiency of both yin and yang.
