Zhao Beichen, whose Taoist name is Yizi, called himself the old man Qing Feng.He was the authentic11th generation descendant of internal alchemy in QuanzhenLongman Taoism, also the important representative of Nedan clarity Taoism in lateQing dynasty and Republican period. In the10th year of Xianfeng period, which isthe lunar Calendar of July16(September1,1860), he was born in the Yangfangtown, Changping district, Beijing city. In his whole life, Zhao Bichen took over30people as his masters in order to get the secrets of Lives simultaneous and he finallyacquired the internal alchemy secrets of Wuliu school from the Zen masters LiaoRen and Liao Kong in Zhenjiang Gold Mountain Monastery. Zhao Bichen mainlyinherited the secrets of the Wuliu faction,Quanzhen Longman School, meanwhile hetook in the other theories and methods of internal alchomy from Quanzhen Nanwuschool. He founded Qian Feng Congenial school centered by the internal alchemypractice in late Qing dynasty Republican period. In his lifetime, he had more than2,000disciples who spread over the country and even till today there are manyinternal alchemy decedents of Qian Feng School.Zhao Bichen actively wrote several books, among of them there were threebooks The Tips of Life Law, The Guide of Physiology and The Interpretation of ThreeCharacters Method handed down to generations. Among the three books, The Tipsof Life Law elaborates the theories and methods of the internal alchemy practice fromQuanzhen Qianfeng school. This book explains the sealed secrets of internal alchemyin detailed and informal ways which is the most influential one of Zhao Bichen’sworks.Zhao Bichen’s internal alchemy theories can be mastered from several aspects,the life theory, the Ding furnace theory, the medicine theory and the heat controltheory. Lives Simultaneous theory is the center of internal alchemy theory in Toism.Putting disposition as the primordial spirit and treating life as the vitality of kidney,Zhao Bichen advocated that disposition should be disciplined first then the life and heemphasized the relationship between disposition and life. It is clarity Toism’s Dingfurnace theory that regarding mud ball palace as Ding furnace, genuine energy asfurnace and emphasizing the close relationship between Ding furnace and spirit. Itbelongs to the practical medical theory and heat theory of internal alchemy whichexplains about medicine and heat in the procession of internal alchemy. In the book The Tips of Life Law, Zhao Bichen carefully discusses the several processes of layingthe foundation, practicing the energy, practicing the breath and practicing the spiritwhich he calls them as basics, intermediate, understanding and application.In the unsettled late Qing, early republican period, the old man Qian Fengunselfishly disclosed the Toisim secrets of health regimen about Lives Simultaneoustheory, which made the internal alchemy secrets spread from the monastery to thepublic. The internal alchemy practice of Toism is handed down and spread over,getting through the harsh period when traditional Chinese culture confronted with thehuge crisis. Zhao Beichen not only made huge contribution for continuing the internalalchemy in Toism, preserve Chinese culture, but also propel Chinese culture to theworld as the traditional Chinese health regimen.
