"The Figures" is Liu Shao’s book done in his later years which is about appreciation figure of person, and on the basis of congenital "quality" and "nature" of different characters are divided into different categories, and different categories have different "material" and "energy", and then through the figures of the "quality" and "nature" to recognize the "material" and "energy" of people.The core method of appreciating persons in "The Figures" is to understand the qualitative character internal from external sign appearance, and this book is divided into two main sections by the "nine features" and "eight views"."The Figures" is a summing-up about the character of method, process, results of aesthetic activities, and it is an aesthetic judgment, it represents the trend of appreciating figures of person in the period during the end of Han Dynasty and the beginning of Wei Dynasty. Appreciating figures of person was prevailed in the late Han Dynasty, at this stage it was chaotic political which opened the chains for appreciation figures, the fusion of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, which made the fuzzy of character judge standard, so that the aesthetic appreciation of characters brought to freedom. The judgment foothold in "The Figures" is the "material" and "energy", the only character itself as the object, made the person become the aesthetic object.
