As a subculture that distinguishes others with rebellion, rock music has experienced a special procedure in Mainland China. In1980s, such kind of music was introduced in China with other western cultures, bringing stimulation and vigor towards the stifled people. A Decade later in1990s, reform and opening up and socialist market economy profoundly changed the society, which cultivated a soil for the up-growth of rock music. Rock music conveyed emotions of disposed and discontented as a mouthpiece of the period, arousing resonance among masses. In terms of the whole social cultural field, the rock music of Mainland China celebrated a new golden era. Nevertheless, it depleted its feature of a subculture by acting the part of a hero of the period, which was not in a normal state. In the21st century, China approached the age of consumption in line with the rest of the world. Rebellion and independence of rock music were regarded as an anachronism by those who were enjoying the carnival of consumption, yet this stirring music accompanied with such a carnival. Inevitably, rock music reverted to a subculture by going underground. Rock music in Mainland China seemed to be downfallen. However, it has just reverted to its substance as a subculture. In the first decade of21st century, it developed outside the view of masses with problems exposed. It is uncertain whether it will celebrate a new golden era. Anyway, what is definite is that it will not wither momentarily.
