Expression is the most important pattern of manifestation of human emotion.Be aware of others’ feeling and make effective feedback are the foundation of humancommunication. The study explored70seven to fifteen year-old mental retardedchildren on the recognition of four kind of facial and vocal expression which is happy, sad, scared and angry, to explore their peculiarity of recognition, eye movement andthe priority of selection. The result showed that:(1) The order of mental retarded children’s scores on the recognition of fourkinds of facial expression is happy, anger, sadness, and fear. There was no significantdifference between the three age groups. Males’ total score of these4kinds of facialexpression is significantly higher than that of girls’. Mild mental retarded children’sscore of anger was significantly higher than moderate mental retarded children.(2) on the long-time and short-time these two different image presentconditions, There was no significant difference in the scores of mental retardedchildren on4kinds of facial expression. That means either extend or shorten theimage present time was no influence to the recognition of mental retarded children.(3) The average fixation frequency of mental retardation children on the fourkinds of expression was significantly different. The average fixation frequency ofanger was lower than happy, sad and angry while angry was significantly higher thanscared and sad. The order was that, anger>sad≈happy>scared. The average fixationfrequency on the eyebrow was higher than that of nose and mouth, and close tosignificant level.(4) Mental retarded children’s scores on the recognition of anger vocalexpression is significantly higher than that of sadness and fear. With the growth ofthe age, the ability of vocal-expression recognition improved gradually especiallybetween the age of13to15. There was no significant gender difference. Mild andmoderate mental retarded children’s recognition of vocal expression was significantlydifferent.(5)There was no significant difference in the scores of mental retarded children on4kinds of facial expression recognition between two conditions of voice speedwhich were primitive speed and slow speed (slow down a times). But a certain lawhas showed: in the primitive speed, the recognition scores of happy and angry werehigher than in the slow speed, while in the slow speed, recognition scores of sadnessand fear were higher than in the primitive speed.(6) Mental retarded children’s scores in recognition of facial expression weresignificantly higher than that of the vocal expression. Meanwhile, they showedsignificant high correlation. In conflict situations of facial and vocal expression, children’s judge the type of emotion more according to the facial expression thanvocal expression.
