Hungarian Rhapsody No.9being the study object, this essay discusses its composition features and performance techniques in different aspects through the entry point of performing analysis.The rhapsody is analyzed in this essay through three chapters. The creation motivation and material sources are discussed in the first chapter, emphasizing on the connection between the material that Franz Liszt utilized and Hungarian folk music including Gypsy music. In the second chapter, the musical characteristics of Hungarian Rhapsody No.9are analyzed with a detailed discussion in the aspects of musical structure, Hungarian traditional musical elements and variation technique and its characteristics. In the last chapter, the skill difficulties in the performance of the rhapsody, including fast tone cluster, repeated notes, cross hands requiring semiquaver, continuous staccatos of single tone and chord, jump playing and the support of emotion in performance of the highs are discussed to explain and analyze the performance annotation, focusing on the linkup of periods and the use of pedal.This essay aimed in helping piano performers give audiences vivid performances of Hungarian Rhapsody No.9through a better understanding of this rhapsody in both depth and width.
