The birth and development of country novels is closely linked with China’s modernity conceiving. In modern times, China has been in the social transformation and cultural changes, and the conflict of traditional and modern civilizations of rural society is the most intense. Therefore, country novels embody a concentrated reflection of the Chinese intellectuals’ modern thinking and expression of their complex thoughts and feelings in the process of pursuiting for modernity, as well as all the prospect to the future. With the establishment of the market economy system in the1990s and the arrival of the consumption era, country novels were also facing unprecedented impact. The connotation of country novels changed, and its creative outlook also showed a distinctive characteristics. This thesis cuts from the view of modernity, and discuss the changes of country novels during the period of social transition in the1990s.This thesis mainly includes the following four parts. The introduction part discusses the connotation changes of country novels, and briefly introduces the creation and research overview of country novels in the1990s. The first chapter explains the concept of "modernity", and roughly combing the background of country novels in the1990s.The second chapter is exploring the thematic implications of country novels in the1990s in the context of the unfinished modernity, with the following four aspects, folk and historical reconstruction, rural reformation and rural workers in cities, returning home and looking for spiritual roots,and keeping home and poetic dwelling. The creation of the four aspects implicits different attitudes of the author to modernity. In the context of modernities, the aesthetic form of country novels in the1990s is also gradually changed. Country narration transformates from enlightenment to the folk. Realism, an ancient creation, has been changed in the persistence. The local customs and practices and local color of country novels is also in desalination. The third chapter analyzes the three creative tendencies. Chapter IV discusses the confusion of the spirit of the country novelist in the1990s, mainly expanding in three fields:the embarrassment of echoing the modernity, the lost resulting from attachment to tradition and the void of lookout for the home. The conclusion part praises the deep and multidirectional reflection that in the pain eyes of facing the reality of country novels in the1990s.
