From the first translation work to his last novel that published in 1869,in almost forty years,Goncharov record,conceive and comment a Russia that is in a period of great change with three novels:A Common Story,Oblomov and The Precipice.For the Russian intellectuals of 19th century,including Goncharov,modernity is an unavoidable subject.In response to the creative destruction caused by the reform of Peter the Great,with the enlightenment philosophical spirit,capitalist ethics and science and technology as the connotation,with the exploring the modern road that belongs to Russia as purpose,and the country-city space as the expression,Goncharov's thinking about Russian modernity is fully developed.This dissertation is divided into six sections,including an introduction,four parts of main contents and the conclusion.First parts introduces the author and his novels and the research about Goncharov.The first section of the first chapter states the concept of modernity,the role that enlightenment modernity played in the social transformation of Russia.The second section expounds the legitimacy of using space theory to study Goncharov's modernity thought.The second chapter analyzes the country and city space in A Common Sto,y.The essence of the elegant idyllic in country is the gluttony custom and indifferent interpersonal relationship.Factory labor and bureaucracy construct the city,while it fundamentally dissolves its progressive doctrine foothold.The third'chapter analyzes the city and country narrative in Oblomov.The country has changed from a real space to a dream and the marginalized area of city,which contains the food,body,and static production and life.In the city,the traditional aristocrats,citizens and the emerging bourgeoisie constitute three different kinds of reality.The fourth chapter analyzes the space of The Precipice.The proportion of cities in this novel is much lower than that of the previous two.There is no serious life and ideological content,it's just the game's background for the characters.The country plays the role of moral redemption,but the hidden information is trying to deconstruct this redemption.The conclusion summarizes the content,sorts out the general features and changes of the city and country space of the novel,and summarizes the significance of the space narrative for re-understanding the three works and Goncharov's thought.
