Culture-Speaking of the country politics in the context of modernity is the key feature in Henan New Era novels. Under the cover of split, difference, and marginalizatin the consistent pursuit of modern reason and enlightenment, the firm agreement and expectation of self-identification become the transparent characteristics of Henan literature, and in particular the embodiment of modernity of Henan new era novels. Country political culture's hidden but omnipresent limitation and restraint to the creative subject and their creative process is the inevitable nightmare of twentieth-century Chinese novelist, the most significant problem to Henan novelist and their works seeking for a breakthrough in quality. This dissertation, taking Henan New Era novels as object, begins from the angle of regional culture to have a literary thematic research, based on the text analysis of culture-speaking of the country politics in the context of modernity, a question ignored intentionally or not in the study of the twentieth-century Chinese novel. In the history of the twentieth-century Chinese novel, some Henan novelists are better, but wholly speaking their voice is weak, and alone. The main reason of this weakness and loneliness, personally speaking, does not rest on the writers' works themselves, but the researchers' disregard results from different reasons. It is similar to our attitudes toward Zhang Ailing, Shen Chongwen, Xiao Hong, etc, such writers' historical attitude. Their loneliness and popularity are more due to the factors outside them and their works. Therefore, we can come to a conclusion: a literary phenomenon or the disappearance and reemergence of a group of historical figures, to some sense, are determined by time, society and humanity such "receptive background". Taking these factors into my consideration, I choose Henan New Era novels as the object of my dissertation; and moreover, select Culture-Speaking of the country politics in the context of modernity as my title is that this is the common trend of most Henan novelists in creation. According to my reading, there are not less studies of Henan novels in new era, for example, Liu Zengjie's Spirit of Median—Twentieth-Century Henan Literature, Sun Li's A New Explanation of Li Zhun, Tree in Wind, On Literary Henan People, etc., such monographs, and Star Groups—on Nanyang Writers edited by Chen Jihui, On Contemporary Writers of Nanyang edited by Bai Wanxian and Zhang Shuheng, and some articles on literary journals, academic journal and newspapers are best evidence. There are also some young scholars taking Henan New Era novels as their master and doctor degree dissertation for further study. These stuidies from different angles in exploring the advantages and disadvantages of Henan New Era novels make great achievements, especially on the regional culture, custom and social stance, etc., such aspects of Henan New Era novels the studies has reached a rather great height. Even so, there is still someplace for study. Concretely speaking, these studies are mainly centering on the external or superficial level of the works, and in combing, analyzing and criticizing these works pay less attention to the factors hidden in the deeper level which restrain the development, for instance, the context of Henan New Era novelist and their effort for breakthrough. My intention begins with Culture-Speaking of the country politics in the context of modernity, a point neglected by more researchers. This is the originality of my dissertation because as to the actuality of Henan New Era novel-creation the inner limitation, or domination of the country politics, as the most important aspect, is less illustrated. To some sense, this dissertation offers a new point of view or a way of study.
