This paper first makes a brief introduction to the history of farmers’ paintings atTonggu village in Majiang county, Guizhou province, then mainly analyzes the artisticcharacteristics of the paintings. In addition, the paper displays the unique artisticcharm of the paintings, hopefully enhancing the public awareness of the heritage anddevelopment of the farmers’ paintings. The paper consists of six parts and amounts to40,000charactersThe prologue reviews the current researches on farmers’ paintings and expoundsthe purpose, significance and the methodology of the paper’s research on farmers’paintings.The first part briefly introduces the farmers’ paintings at Tonggu village inMajiang county, Guizhou province, including the ecological environment, thedefinitions of farmer’s painting and the farmers’ painting at Tonggu village and thebackground and development of the farmers’ paintings at Tonggu village.The second part summarizes the three themes of farmers’ paintings at Tongguvillage in Majiang county and they are abundant harvest, folk festivals and daily life.It also probes into the farmers’ painting thoughts and techniques.The third part discusses the social functions of the farmers’ paintings at Tongguvillage in Majiang county. According to Malinowski’s Function theory, the socialfunctions of the farmers’ paintings in Miao people community fall into four categories:aesthetic function, cognitive function, entertaining function and educative functionThe fourth part analyzes the artistic features of the farmers’ paintings at Tongguvillage in Majiang county. By analyzing the three artistic features of the farmers’paintings at Tonggu village in Majiang county, we can them in two words: simplicityand frankness. This part also emphasizes that the farmers’ paintings at Tonggu village,the development and continuity Chinese folk arts, is a source of creation for modernarts.The fifth part explores conservation, inheritance and development of the farmers’paintings at Tonggu village in Majiang county. Based on data collected from field investigation, this part examines the current situation of inheriting farmers’ paintingtechniques, the relevant policies employed by local government and the developmentprospect of the farmers’ paintings at Tonggu village, aiming to promote the protectionof the farmers’ paintings at Tonggu village.The last part, conclusion part, summarizes the features of the farmers’ paintingsat Tonggu village: original, simple and elegant, which provide urban people with ameans to seek natural and unpretentious beauty in life.
