Mask, as a symbol of special meaning, is a ancient cultural phenomena with long-lasting history in the world-wide area. Primitive spiritual practice like Shamanism and totem worship lay base stones for psychology part of mask. The hunting activities and wars between tribes in primitive society drive mask to emerge. In Neolithic period, the primitives’hunting activities and wars between tribes, totem worship toward the nature together with spiritual practices give birth to colorful culture of mask. With the development of relating subjects, both the art and academic value of mask are receiving more and more attention of academia and society these days, although it was ever considered as unrefined because of its coarse look.In the scenario of ever further study on mask, it is necessary for us to put into comparison the masks in China and ones in the left part of the world, and conduct influence and parallel study in order to understand the specialties of Chinese masks on a more broad horizon and deeper level. In this case, the study, protection and development of Chinese masks are promoted.Japan, an important neighbour of China, has reached a fairly high level in the area of arts and crafts, especially the remarkable study on its national quintessence--Noh mask. With the rise of people’s interests in Nuo culture in China, many scholars have found that Chinese and Japanese masks relate much with each other, especially Nuo and Noh masks. As a neighbour country with strong ties in mask culture area and much influence in early culture and art, it is necessary for us to compare and classify them and explore their origin and development. So far the literature have put emphasis on Nuo and Noh masks’respective art characters and development, with little emphasis on their origins relations in mask art and further discussion in its implicit religious meanings.Regarding all of these, influence and parallel comparison studies are applied to Nuo and Noh art, so as to compare their difference fully, deeply and clearly, to judge their developing tendency and to contribute to the research of Nuo mask in China.Both Nuo masks and Noh masks have many branches with characters. After reviewing the development and current research of both masks, emphasis will be put on the comparison of their styles, looks, clour and crafts. Then the religious and folk meanings behind their look are explained. Finally, advices are proposed according to both masks’situations, in order to get clear and reasonable comparison results, to understand both masks more scientifically, and make their beauty appreciated and stand out brilliantly in new era. |
