In the world where multimedia exists everywhere in our life, the boundary between painting and photography becomes blurry. Photography starts to play an important role in the creation of painting, and becomes a rare input due to its quick and easy access. Being one of the most important means of culture, photography and its social and spiritual meaning appears more and more in the creation of painting."Photographic Painting" is the result of the modern time of today. It presents the visual effect of photography in terms of painting, which becomes a new expression of art. As a result, photographic painting adds more and more weight in China’s contemporary art, hence drawing much more attention. In2004, Shu Yang raised the concept of "China Photographic Painting" to capture its emergence. Meanwhile, due to the fact that "China Photographic Painting" does not provide originality when choosing public images, nor does it provide explanations of the image itself, it makes it easier for the audience to capture the meaning that artists want to express. This paper chooses the photographic expression of contemporary Chinese oil painting to analyse its development in today’s time, and further explore the outcome of photographic expression in China and the experiments of Chinese photographic painting artists. Aiming at understanding more about photographic expression of China contemporary painting, the author, through exploring photographic painting, obtains some instructional directions towards her own painting, and makes some valuable thoughts on China’s contemporary art. This paper divides into four parts, each part interrelating to others. The first part discusses how "photographic painting" combines the photographic expression with local culture in China.Part two describes the birth of "photographic painting" in the west and its impact on China’s contemporary art, with the illustration of Richter. Part three presents some new forces from "photographic painting" into contemporary art. The last part draws some key points in this paper, together with authors own paintings, to conclude the direction of development of China contemporary oil painting, and make further recommendations.
