European traditional realistic oil painting always bears the functionof narration while perfecting technical language. No matter religious stories or mundane life, they are all the themes repeatedly represented by painters. From theme selection to theme expression, characters are the most important narration carrier under the brush of painters; and the selection and shaping of images influences the perception,understanding, imagination and expectation of audiences to stories.“Judas” under the brush of Davinci,“Adam and Eve” under the brush of Michelangelo, and “small character” under the brush of Caravaggio always let people be very assured of their authenticity. If letting one upright and decent character play the role of Judas, would itstill receive the sense of reality and theatricality of Last Supper?Obviously, it can neither be done by “shaping”, nor by “language”. The Milkmaid of Vermeer moved numerous people. It is difficult to imagine that if such maid is a beautiful maiden wearing gorgeous clothes and holding the newly bought milk pot, while the desk is placed with irrelevant inanimate object in another room, would it still reachthe appeal of such painting if letting Vermeer repaint as per such composition?
