J.Hillis Miller is a well-known critic of contemporary America, he is one of the mainrepresentatives of the Yale School, and he is also a flag bearer of Deconstruction in America. His theoretical research on literature has gone through two stages, the first is ideology criticismof Phenomenology phase in1958-1970, the second is deconstructive criticism which focuses onlinguistic rhetoric and textual heterogeneity from1970until now, and this phase also includesspeech act theory, the latest theoretical achievements, studying on linguistic ability to behaviorand the ethics of reading. This thesis is based on his second phase theoretical achievements, tocombine and interpret his deconstructive reading theory and then give it comments, whichestablished in reading his works, like Fiction and Repetition:Seven English Novels(1982), TheEthics of Reading(1986), Restate Deconstruction(1998), Speech acts in literature(2001),Others(2001), and On literature(2002),and so on.Reading is an action in our life, interpretationof text, and it also can do something, these three levels constitute reading’s basic meaning, which is the core vocabulary of deconstructive reading theory. This thesis seized “reading” asthe keyword, analyzed deconstructive reading theory, we may also call it rhetorical reading, with varying degrees, and from different aspects, like the theoretical sources, connotation, strategies, and appraisal. In the introduction part, the thesis illustrated the significance of the topic first, describedMiller and his extensive writings briefly, summarized the basic connotation of Miller’s conceptof deconstructive reading, and further planned the writing ideas of this article. After it stated theresearch status on the concept of deconstructive reading, and because of some blind spots anderrors based on the study, in this part, it affirmed the necessity of this paper’s combining work. The first chapter grabbed two sources of Miller’s concept of deconstructive reading-Derrida’s concept of Différance and Paul de Man’s view of rhetoric, and then outlined them;in this part, its emphasis is on explaining the rhetorical reading, the concept ofdeconstructive reading, fundamentally speaking, is "rhetorical reading". The heterogeneityevolved from Différance and rhetoric as linguistic essence have become two principles whileMiller engages in his deconstructive reading. At the second chapter, it mainly described two strategies of deconstructive reading theory-the repetition and the ethics of reading. The relations between repetition and intertextuality, three types and two forms of repetition were discussed, it also interpreted performativeutterance which the ethics of reading was based, it manifested that literature as illocutiondiscourse is effective, and the relationship between reading and ethics was stated. Reading isdoing, echoing the ethical rules in the text, but these rules are real others, on this level, misreading will get some inevitability. The third chapter is about the assessment on the concept of deconstructive reading, and inthe context of globalization, it briefly described the marginalization of current literary studies, and then, in this case, Miller’s reading is not just for literary texts, but all symbols.
