In the long river of the American contemporary literature,science fiction is one of the essences.Ursula K.Le Guin,the queen of feminist science fiction,is deserved the honor that her works bring to her.The Left Hand of Darkness,which wins both the Hugo Prize and the Nebula Prize soon after publication,is considered as one of the best novels of Ursula K.Le Guin.Ursula K.Le Guin is good at combining science fiction with many elements,such as postmodernism,human nature and feminist problems.This multiple writing style makes her succeed in many kinds of literature genres.So far,she has published seventeen novels,eleven children literature works,more than one hundred short stories,six books of poetry and some translation and drama composition,which has fully shown Ursula K.Le Guin's diverse accomplishments to us.Based on the plot in The Left Hand of Darkness,the thesis mainly analyzes the novel's profound meanings of breaking traditional and fixed concept from the perspectives of J.Hillis Miller.According to the combination of the novel's content and deconstruction view,the whole analyzing process is meticulously presented in this paper.This paper is composed of four parts,including the introduction and the conclusion.Chapter One mainly comes to the introduction of Ursula K.Le Guin and The Left Hand of Darkness.This part illustrates that family and education backgrounds have great impact on Le Guin's writing styles and the way of thinking.The overview on present research situation from home and abroad is shown in this part.Chapter Two starts from the origin of deconstructionism,offers a sketch of the main progress of J.Hillis Miller,his works and his new perspective of deconstruction of Fiction and Repetition.This part explores three main themes about J.Hillis Miller's deconstruction view,which is composed of repetition,indeterminacy and decentralization.Chapter Three is the most important part of this paper.It centers on the analysis of deconstruction process combing with concrete cases in this novel.This part is divided into three main subtitles,each of them explores the profound significances of novel from living examples of repetition,indeterminacy and decentralization.The first subtitle presents the special implication behind repeated scenes,incidents and speeches of this novel.The second subtitle focuses on the textual impact which brought by the uncertainties of this novel including gender,language and narrative perspective.The third subtitle mainly discusses how deconstructive appearances gradually present themselves clearly in the novel through the breakage of male power,centralized power and traditional narratives.Chapter Four draws the conclusion that Ursula K.Le Guin is a successful female writer who frees herself from conventional imprisonment.Moreover,under Miller 's perspective of deconstruction,we learn that different repetitive things bring different textual meanings.Narration,language and character portraying in a literary work have various uncertainties.Generally speaking,the deconstructive reading of The Left Hand of Darkness plays a significant role in promoting the novel's meaning generation and theme expression.
