In recent years, Zhao Baogang’s works about urban youth drama haveachieved impressive results. The dramas, on the one hand, bring entertainment to theaudience; on the other hand, stimulate the development of China’s television industryand other industries. However, some problems, such as too many commercials andrelatively the stories are too ideal, have aroused many doubts.Any phenomenon has hidden deep reasons; the increasingly powerful influenceof TV just represents the power expansion of mass culture. Mass culture brings us withmental comforts and entertainment, we immerse in it; at the same time, we should notethe negative aspects and keep objective and cautions.By means of various research methods, such as text analysis, literature researchetc. The article focuses on Zhao Baogang’s urban youth dramas; and takes his youthtrilogy—“Struggle”,“My Youthfulness”,“Beijing Youth” as samples. From theperspective of mass culture, the article gives comprehensive analysis about such dramas;the author hopes that it can provide some enlightenment to current TV operation. Thefirst part of the article is introduction, it summarizes research questions and significance,at the same time, and current academic researches related to the topic are reviewed. Thesecond part is an overview of China’s urban youth dramas. First of all, the articlediscusses about the important cultural context of urban youth dramas—mass culture.This part has specific descriptions about mass culture, on which such dramas aredepended. Besides, it explores paraphrases and characteristics of mass culture. In thispart, the concept of such dramas is defined. Provide background information for thestudy of this paper. In the third part, the article focuses on Zhao Baogang’srepresentative urban youth dramas and gives a comprehensive analysis of the cultureand Zhao’s urban youth dramas. For the dramas, it analyzes from some specific aspects,such as topic selection, structure arrangements, lines design. The fourth part, from theperspective of commercialized operation, the author analyses the strategies of ZhaoBaogang youth urban dramas, explores the commercial ads, publicity and selection ofbroadcast channels, so that we can gain insight into Zhao’s urban youth drama. In thefifth part, we talk about the impact of Zhao’s urban youth dramas; it was elaboratedfrom positive and negative aspects respectively. On the one hand, his dramas meet thedemands of audience and bring a lot of economic returns to the producers andadvertisers; on the other hand, for the dramas are full of mechanical reproduction and symbolic consumption, the part analyzes their negative effects. The sixth part talksabout the future of China’s urban youth dramas. It suggests that we should have correctunderstanding of mass culture and stick to the unification of art and commerce.Excessive commercialization and over-entertainment should be avoided. The last part isconclusion for the article. Urban youth dramas should eliminate the disadvantages ofexcessive commercialization and over-entertainment. At the same time, stakeholders aresupposed to take more social responsibilities, what’s more, strengthen originality andnovelty of such dramas, so that the needs of audience can be really met.
