As the traffic congestion becomes a severe problem nowadays, which caused by the rapid economic growth and urbanization, more and more cities focus its new transportation on developing the underground space. The murals painted on the walls of the subway station have been emerging. The historical meaning, beautiful scenes, and geographical features of the cities are all transformed to a more perceptual image to the people. Unlike other murals, the subway station murals are strongly limited by the underground environment conditions. Looking at the murals, we discover that they are generally painted on the station hall, the above of the stairs and the image walls in the entrance and exit, which are usually ignored by the passengers. Many murals do not annotate the name, author, and the thought for composition, which would influence people’s feelings about the murals. They may not understand the connections between the theme of the murals and the local history or cultures, which indirectly influences the communication of the culture. The subjects of artistic, architecture, and psychology are involved in this research. I used methods of inductions, comparisons, and field research to summarize the knowledge system of public art and subway station murals. According to today’s practical research situation and the materials gathered through the field research, I summarized the basic characteristics of subway station murals and influential factors. By analyzing some typical subway station murals around the world, I managed to discover the existing problems of subway station murals in our country, proposing suggestions to solve the problems and predicting the future trend of its development. I hope by discovering and making deepened research on the field of subway station murals, the future murals creation would be encouraged, and the knowledge system of the subway station murals would be enhanced. The public art awareness would be improved by attaching importance to the developing demand of the subway station space, and the city would be better promoted and more attractive.
