Prefaces and postscript text is an important style of the ancient Chinese prose. It has beenrapid development in the cultural environment of Song Dynasty which emphasis on literature.Because of located in a special circumstances, prefaces and postscript text of South SongDynasty shows different features with the previous dynasties. Zhou Bida is one of the mostimportant essayists of South Song Dynasty. He has a large number of prefaces and postscriptswhich have rich ideological content and unique artistic features. His excellent quality prefacesand postscripts have a certain representation in literary of South Song Dynasty. For a longtime, academic studies mainly focus on Zhou Bida’s political achievements, while the studyon his prose is relatively weak. Although there have been several studies about Zhou Bida’sprose in recent years, but compared to study of his other literary style, the study of hisprefaces and postscripts is still a relatively weak link. Therefore this paper select "study onZhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts" as the title, attempts to systematic, detailed analysis andresearch his prefaces and postscripts from five aspects, the outline is following:The introduction part begins with an overview academic research status of Zhou Bidaand his prefaces and postscripts since the1980’s, and then elaborate the research value andtext basis of this paper.The first chapter attempt to define the concept of "prefaces and postscripts" in order toclear the scope of the study of this paper, then sort out the development of prefaces andpostscripts in South Song Dynasty and its previous dynasties, finally summed up the reasonsthat prefaces and postscript got a rapid development in South Song Dynasty. Here we alsohave an overall overview of Zhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts.The second chapter is to analyze the "Saint and Emperor" thinking which embodied inZhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts. This part includes two respects: On the one hand, ZhouBida emphasis on the wisdom of "Saint", he advocates moral cultivation and have a pure soulby erudite to enhance the quality of personality, and use the article to elucidate morality andpersonality. On the other hand, Zhou Bida also pay attention to the methods of "Emperor"through emphasize national integrity, oppose crafty and fawning in the imperial court andencourage pupil or scholar of younger age to make contributions and start their career.Meanwhile, with the development of "Saint and Emperor" concept and historical backgroundof South Song Dynasty, the formation of Zhou Bida’s "Saint and Emperor" thinking in hisprefaces and postscripts are influenced by Confucianism thought, political and cultural environment, his own personality and family background and some other factors.The third chapter focuses on the artistic features of Zhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts.Zhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts have broad themes with both detailed and omitdiscussion. His articles are adept at structure and organization by using metaphor, allusion andother techniques. Zhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts combined both writing forms of proseand parallel prose, his articles express smoothly with facile language sentences. All of thesecharacteristics are showed in Zhou Bida’s prefaces and postscripts and eventually formed anoverall style of elegant and natural.The fourth chapter is to analyze the status and influence of Zhou Bida’s prefaces andpostscripts in South Song Dynasty, phylogeny of prefaces and postscripts and even ancientChinese culture and then summarize contributions and limitations of Zhou Bida’s prefacesand postscripts.
