This paper will analyze the translation of introductions to the nature and geographyappearing in Chinese city profiles on the macro and micro level. It is based on thetranslation variation theory and it probes into the effect on Chinese-English translationsbrought by factors such as culture and communication.The author has built small-scale corpus by translated texts of Chinese-languagecity profiles chosen from official websites, publications and journals as well as byEnglish-language city profiles from Wikipedia and foreign official websites.The author first examines differences between Chinese texts and correspondingtexts in English. Then, after comparing the translated texts and the original English texts,the author summarized problems in the translated texts from the perspective ofpragmatism, culture, and language, which are barriers in the process of cross-culturalcommunications. Finally, the author examined English translation strategies, includingamplification, omission, compiling and adaptation, in order to provide references forimproving English-language translations and realize the communication effect ofChinese city profiles. |
