A Study Of The Strategies In Interpreting Chinese Verses From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

This thesis studies Chinese ancient verse interpretation under the Translation Variation Theory.By taking the quoted verses in Premier's press conferences from 2004 to 2012 as examples to carry out specific case analyses,the thesis deals with the characteristics of Chinese verses and difficulties of their interpretation to discuss how the strategies of Translation Variation Theory can be employed to solve the difficulties so as to better convey the speaker's intention.Translation Variation Theory is a translation theory characterized by changes in translation proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian.Nowadays,more and more people are applying it to the process of translating works.Many research on the application of the Translation Variation Theory focuses on translation activities.The research on its guidance on interpretation still has room for development.Chinese verse interpretation under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory is even rarer.In fact,some translation strategies of Translation Variation Theory can better and more effectively solve the unique difficulties of verse interpretation.This thesis aims to discuss how the theory helps interpreter solve the difficulties of verse interpretation.Conciseness and abstract,the pursuit of the beauty of rhythm and symmetry,and the changing grammar of ancient Chinese are all characteristics of Chinese verses.In view of its characteristics,interpreter needs to reduce complexity,remove redundant parts,and eliminating grammatical differences when interpreting.This thesis discusses how the three translation strategies of Translation Variation Theory,namely,explaining interpreting,selective interpreting and edited interpreting,can solve the above difficulties in verse interpretation,so as to find a simpler and more effective method of verse interpretation.It is hoped that the study on the application of the translation strategies of Translation Variation Theory to verse interpretation can provide some theoretical and practical value to researchers and interpreters.
