Relations with neighboring countries has always been an important partof a country’s foreign policy. However, the south China sea and thediaoyu islands issue of recent years are not only highlighted the tensionsamong China and neighboring countries, also reflected our passiveposition in diplomacy.This thesis attempts to analyze the theoretical foundation of ancient Chinain dealing with problems of surrounding relationship, including theinfluence of Confucianism and Legalism, then combing ancient practicewith neighboring countries, for example, the millitary conflict betweenthe Han dynasty and the Huns; keeping peace by marriage and governingaccording to local custom; the institutionalization of the surroundingrelations represented by tributary system. On this basis, summed up aseries of effective experience such as combining force with nonviolence,promoting political relations through economic development, cultivatingthe soft cultural environment of cooperation. Meanwhile, integrating thecontemporary China’s foreign policies with the difficulties of the eastAsian regional cooperation and tension, looking ahead to the possibledirection of the construction of the future regional order and China’s rolein this process.
