The goal of this paper is to study Abraham Kuyper’ pluralism social theory, which based on his sphere sovereignty conception. On the one hand, this thesisillustrates the theological foundation and basic content of Kuyper’s pluralism socialtheory, and his critique of the modernity question of19th century based on his socialtheory. By analyzing Kuyper’s position on the high education independence(andacademic authority)and poverty question, this study also tries to understandKuyper’s pluralism social theory on the other hand. This thesis holds that on the high education(and academic)problem, Kuyperemphasizes the independence of various social spheres; and on the approach of thepoverty, he highlights the organic unity of all the social fields. However, both of hisemphasizing is inherent in the social ontology of his sphere sovereignty. Therefore,Kuyper’s pluralism social theory on two social questions has internal logicconsistence, and the conception of sphere sovereignty is the theological foundationof this unity. In addition, we insist that leveraging the concept of public justice, mayfacilitate a better understanding the theory characteristic and purport of Kuyper’ssocial doctrine for one thing, and also could mitigate the theoretical difficulties of hissphere sovereignty and pluralism social theory, and help to re-explore andre-elucidate the meaning and value of his doctrine. What the justice emphasizing isthe “suitable justice”, which enable to support a institutional public life and toaccommodate the social expression of the diverse religious and ideologicalworldview in modern society. From the perspective of public justice, to reconstruct ajust institutional public life, the core meaning of Kuyper’s sphere sovereignty andpluralism social theory is that we should respect a social ontological order, whichsustains the human’s widely cultural participation and the free development of thehuman spirit, but not the human interaction in other fields dominated by theadvance spheres.
