After the outbreak of Mukden Incident, instead of keeping a distance from politics, Chinese liberal intellectuals started to consider politics as an effective means of rescuing national crisis. They had a great discussion on various aspects of China’s politics for the sake of offering proposals to the National Government for reference. Facing the world tide and trend, along with the domestic social and political circumstances, Chen Zhimai, a typical model of the liberalistic elite, recognized and reconstructed his views on the western political thoughts and domestic political systems. The thesis aims at summarizing the main content of Chen’s political thoughts with the reference of his released political essays in the1930s and1940s.The main chapters include his comprehension on revolution and reform, democracy and dictatorship, learning west and basing national conditions, the Three People’s Principles; his design on Five-Yuan System, constitutionalism, Party politics, central and local system; his opinions about the Anti-Japanese War, national political education and international relations. On the basis of all above, the thesis makes further efforts to seek the origins of Chen’s political thoughts from modern nationalism, new liberalism and social democratism, as well as analyze the ideological characteristics of Chen’s political thoughts from three aspects:rigorous and pragmatic character, compromised and eclectic attitude and the exploration of a political scholar.
