In the second half of the nineteenth century, the world situation undergoes enormous changes. With the extensive application of the steam engine and electricity, the Western world promotes its productivity exponentially. In this context, the Western powers intensify their pace of colonial expansion to the East. In the East, Japan, after experiencing rapid rise of the Meiji Restoration in Japan, emerges in the powers and stretches its tentacles to the adjacent China. Facing the current endangered situation of the late Qing Dynasty, some of the enlightened scholars claim to learn from the West, and the formation of a far-reaching Westernization Movement begins. Wang Zhichun grows up step by step in such a turbulent era and joins the army in his early days. By wielding his civilian capacity into military matters, he was highly appreciated by those government officials like Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, Chen Baozhen, and Li Hongzhang. He holds unique propositions for the domestic affairs and has diplomatic visits to many countries like Japan, Russia, Germany, Britain and France. He participates in several diplomatic activities, and accumulates adequate experience and insight in foreign relations.This paper intends to launch an in-depth study on the character of Wang Zhichun.In the first part, it introduces the details of Wang Zhichun’s life, and outlines his main works and position.In the second part, it describes the diplomatic activities of Wang Zhichun. In this chapter, the diplomatic activities of Wang Zhichun are divided into two phases-the phase of Sino-French war and the phase of Sino-Japanese war. In the phase of Sino-French war, it mainly describes the activity of Wang Zhichun’s involvement in the Nan yang conspiracy and the development of negotiation about the Sino-Indian border. In the phase of Sino-Japanese war, it mainly describes Wang Zhichun’s travel to Russia to seek for help to fight for Japan, the development of travel among Britain, Germany and France and his diplomatic efforts to defend Taiwan in France.In the third part, it describes Wang ZhiChun’s understanding of the foreign relations of the late Qing Dynasty, respectively delaborating on his understanding of the relationship between China and the West, and the relationship between China and neighboring countries. The first chapter shows Wang Zhichun’s understandings of the relations between China and the West, mainly from the following aspects:Wang Zhichun’s view of Christianity, and diplomacy, understandings of relations between China and Russia, Britain, France, America, Germany, and research on the relevant issues of Opium War. The second chapter mainly describes Wang Zhichun’s understandings of relations between China and The neighboring countries, mainly from the view of understandings of the relation between China and Russia, and understandings of relations between China and dependent states.In the fourth part, it describes Wang Zhichun’s thought of Westernization, starting separately from the form and the content of his thought of Westernization. This chapter focuses on the content of his thought of Westernization from the six aspects of Western source theory, power thoughts, thoughts for the rich, educational philosophy, thinking to protect people, highlighting Wang Zhichun’s unique ideas about foreign relations.In the fifth part, it expresses comments on Wang Zhichun in history objectively, respectively from the progress of ideology and limitations.
