In the first chapter, based on history as the ordinate, the author describes thebody changes in the knowledge field, and sums up that the sociological body turningbenefits from five “helps” of body study. The five “helps” respectively represent themodernity body of the five “physical states”. The “discipline state” is throughout theother four “physical states”, so the author cann’t arrange an independent chapter todescribe the “discipline” body, but use the other four “physical states” to describe it.First is the “consuming” body. The general physical phenomenon turns into atrend of aesthetic consumption. In the consumer society, the external body image hasa special symbol value and tool value. The author considers the behavior ofhighlighting landscape and consumption in today’s society as landscape consumerism.It is closely associated with individual self-identity and reflection.The second is the “medical” body. In the context of modernity, medicalintervention to the body is expanding. If we say traditional social sickness and deathis one of the things of connecting families and community, in that way the socialfunction of modern hospital turns the disease and death into individual events;besides medical words cut out the symbol function of the body, and the author findsout the body implied symbol through the anthropological study of “pain”, Finally theinterference also forms into the “discipline” body.The third one is the “technical” body. At the urging of science and technology,science and technology intervention into the body forms the “power” relations. It ismainly reflected in the body that the “saving strategy” has made some new changes;the author analyzes specifically what “saving strategies” the modernity society has inthis chapter, and lists a detailed analysis of these “strategies”.Finally, it is the “gender” body. Through studying the implied social symbol offemale anorexia nervosa and agoraphobia, the authors emphasis that under pressure ofsocial aesthetic, the anorexia nervosa possess body paradox; Agoraphobia containsthe social symbolic meanings of rejecting modernity space, that the birth of diseaseembodies the independent status of anxiety of men against women.
