With the propelling of new curriculum revolution, News Reading and Practicing, as one of the Chinese Optional courses, has getting into the high-school classes. High school students currently are living in the society, in which the media has been rapid developed and; they get in touch with a bunch of news and information every day. Therefore, the conducting of the News Reading and Practicing courses meet the needs of the social development.The past compulsory teaching materials of High school Chinese courses did have some distribution of news information; however, the numbers of them were constrained by the length of the textbooks.The People’s Educational Press published an optional material to help and aid the teaching in January,2006, which is called News Reading and Practicing. This dissertation investigates this teaching material and researches on the methodology used in this book in-depth in order to make a contribution for the effectiveness of conducting the Chinese Optional Courses.This dissertation mainly focuses on the theory investigation, combined with the observation and conclusion based on experiences; moreover, both the teacher and the students are interviewed. Firstly, there is a discussion about the necessity of the conduct of the New Reading and Practicing courses and draw some conclusions; namely, the course meets with the fast-changing society and it plays a vital role in the New Curriculum Reform. Secondly, the setting of teaching aims and objectives, the choosing and arranging the content in this teaching material will be analysed. Additionally, the analysing of teacher’s problems, such as the lack of news literacy, instruction and explanation and the ability to have a general control of the Macro-teaching environment will be analysed. Finally, there will be some suggestions for teacher based on the analysis, to be more specific, the teacher should know and study the up-to dated news; pay attention to the genre characteristics of the news, combine the classics with the news and get a general improvement from practice.
