In the process of my teaching, I found that though the students were taught by the same teacher, the results were different. Some students got good grades, while others did poorly in school, which made a world of difference between them. What were the reasons that these students were so different? Did the good students have their own unique way of learning? In accordance with lots of documents, I found that there were many factors which influenced the learning achievements, in which learning strategy was a very important aspect. So the teachers could explore excellent students’learning strategies to help with those who wanted to achieve the same success in English language learning experience. For this purpose, a study was carried out by choosing an excellent student in a high school as research object to find her learning strategies.Learning strategies on good learning learners played an important role in second language learning research. From the mid-1970s, studies on good language learners have been carried out in this field. From the1980s, the researches on successful English learners have been done in China. But most of them aimed at college students with the case study, while qualitative research about senior high school students are relatively rare. This thesis deals with a case study on an excellent student in Senior Grade Three in a Model High School. The researcher used the case study to see her learning strategies, relying on the indirect evidence from the questionnaire of Oxford’s, interviews with Li Hong (assumed name) three times, interviews with her high school teacher twice as well as interviews with her two classmates once. The researcher also observed the object before class and after class four times, and listened to her English class four times to find how she studied and rested in school. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction, which briefly introduces background of the research, and significance of the current study.Chapter Two is the literature review. It gives a survey of related researches, which includes related theories on learning strategies and key studies related to the current study.Chapters Three explains methodology which includes the researcher and the subject, and data collection.Chapter Four explains the details of the case study with interviews, questionnaire and observation about the learning strategies used by the case followed by some discusses. On the basis of the interviews and observations, the research described how she studied at school and home as well as the details of learning strategies of Li Hong. The examples were rich, and the contents were real and reliable.Chapter Five draws a conclusion, by answering the research questions, summing up the findings and pointing out limitations, and providing suggestions for further research. The learning strategies of Li Hong could be learned or adopted by students, parents and teachers, and all this could be the material for further research.
