With the SLA’s (Second Language Acquisition) development, an increasingnumber of branches of SLA emerged, also came to realize their own abundant researchachievements and relative theories. Linguists found the great role that the learningstrategies play in English learning gradually. The area of Learning Strategies has beenstudied intensively in western countries since the1980s. In the domestic New EnglishCurriculum Standard (2011), teachers are required to help learners form learningstrategies suitable for them and modify their own learning strategies constantly. Thisresearch took the good English learners (group1) in Nanchang Foreign Language HighSchool as main participants and learners (group2) from Yichun Middle School, anordinary school, as contrast participants. This survey aims at exploring the good Englishlearners’ utilization of English learning strategies, finding out whether the good Englishlearners and average English learners are significantly different in the learning strategies.According to the survey results, firstly, the good English learners use all categories ofEnglish learning strategies more frequently than the average English learners. Amongthe six categories of English learning strategies, the good English learners use cognitivestrategies, meta-cognitive strategies, compensatory strategies and social strategiesrelatively more frequently. Secondly, there are significant differences showed in theutilization of cognitive strategies, meta-cognitive strategies and social strategies between the good English learners and average English learners. Therefore, those threecategories of strategies can be regarded as the keys to achieve good English proficiency.However,this survey indicate the gap between the two groups is narrowing as the yearswent by. Those findings provide many implications to English teachers in middleschools. Knowing the utilization of the good English learners in Foreign LanguageMiddle School is helpful for teachers to improve the average English learners’ ability ofusing English learning strategies, improve the efficiency of English learning and make itpossible for helping average English learners to achieve good English proficiency.
