Related Factors Of The College Students’ Life Satisfaction

Objective:The aim was to investigate the status of life satisfaction, and the relationship between life satisfaction and social support, coping styles, depression, anxiety symptom among college students. Furthermore, the study provided theoretical evidence for prevention and intervention of mental health in college students.Method:The participants were1500college students from two colleges in Fuyang city, Anhui province, using a random sampling method. The data were collected by using Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Trait Coping Style Questionnaire (TCSQ), Self-rating Depression scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS).Results:1. There were significant differences on the college students’ life satisfaction of gender, singleton or non-singleton, grade, urban or rural, different family socioeconomic status and different college styles (all P value<0.01).2. Life satisfaction was significantly negatively correlated with depression and anxiety symptom(all P value<0.01).3. Social support was positively correlated with life satisfaction(r=0.623, P<0.01); Positive coping style was positively correlated with life satisfaction(r=0.431, P<0.01), but negative coping style was negatively correlated with life satisfaction(r=-0.3543, P <0.01); Positive coping style was positively correlated with social support(r=0.325, P <0.01), but negative coping style was negatively correlated with social support(r= 0.223, P<0.01).4. The proportions of mediating effects in total effects of positive coping style in associations among family support, friend support, other support, total social support and life satisfaction were14.56%,16.69%,15.19%,13.30%, respectively. The proportions of mediating effects in total effects of negative coping style in associations among family support, friend support, other support, total social support and life satisfaction were9.17%,9.23%,8.98%,8.09%, respectively.Conclusion:1. Female college students’life satisfaction is higher than that of male college students. Freshman and sophomore’s life satisfaction are higher than that of junior students. Life satisfaction of students with better or medium family socioeconomic status is higher than that of poor family socioeconomic status. Vocational colleges students’life satisfaction is higher than that of the "3+2" type vocational and undergraduate students.2. There is a significantly negative association between depression, anxiety symptom and college students’ life satisfaction.3. There are some correlations between positive coping style, negative coping style, social support and life satisfaction.4. Coping styles play a significantly mediated role between social support and life satisfaction. Good social support and positive coping style help to improve the life satisfaction of college students.
