Setting up the concept of “Lifelong sports” help stimulate people’s awareness of doingsports and acquire fun out of it. At present, the concept of “life-long sports” is being graduallyintroduced to school physical education, and the physical educations both in China and Japanhave incorporated this concept. Nowadays, the number of students in colleges of China andJapan is increasing. After entering society, the chance of learning and doing sports is remotefor the majority for the busy work. That is to say, the period in colleges becomes the one tolearn and do sports. It is quiet important that college students should set up the concept oflifelong sports.Though the rate of people who are devoted to sports professions goes up in both countries, the phenomenon of polarization comes into being between people who do sports and those whodon’t. It is necessary to better the implantation of physical education, thus for students to set upthe life-long sports concept. This paper uses the literature research, questionnaire method, mathematical statisticsmethod and comparative analysis to do a research among the students of Northeast NormalUniversity in Changchun, China and Miyagi Education University in sendai, Japan about theirparticipation in sports and the lifelong sports consciousness, trying to find out the differencesbetween the two countries and get a right solution to nurture students’ consciousness of lifetimesports and hold school sports activities. Meanwhile, from the view of sociology, the paper isalso an overview of sports participation situation and consciousness of lifelong sports in Japanand China. The research found:1. Compared with Japanese college students, Chinese students are less aware of life-longsports, however, Chinese students have a better knowledge concerning health issuesthan Japanese students. Both the Chinese and Japanese students lack of consciousnessof life-long sports.2. Chinese students acquire knowledge about life-sports through TV, newspaper, journals; yet Japanese students through physical education class or electives incolleges.3. Japanese students have higher degree of sports participation than Chinese students.Students from both the two countries spend insufficient time on sports, and many evendon’t do sports daily.4. Chinese students prefer aerobic exercise; while Japanese students prefercomparatively competitive sports.45.4%of Chinese students and59.6%of Japanesestudents never participate outdoor sports. Suggestions:1. What China badly needs to do is to know all kinds of sports events and think about thenew rules of sports events, to make students find fun out of sports. Apart from theoriginal sports events, China needs to practice New Sport, create new sports events,etc.2. Family education and school education should cooperate with each other at the sametime. Emphasis of sports from family can perfect the sports participation of Chinesecollege students.3. Japan needs to improve college students’ consciousness of health; health check shouldbe implemented in college physical education. Also colleges should positively givefeedbacks on the self-check of students’ health and the problems they encounter insports events, introduce solutions to cope up with these issues.4. Both China and Japan should create advantages, such as suitable time or space, forcollege students to participate sports. Thus it would be a good idea to involve theoutdoor sports items in the physical education in colleges, to increase the chance forstudents to participate sports, helping them form the habit of sports participation.
