English reading comprehension is a crucial component of English learning.Nowadays, scholars and instructors have been studying and debating on strategies toimprove students’ reading ability. Strategies of English reading play an important rolein English comprehension. Therefore, proper training on reading strategies andefficient practices through reading exercises can reap the most benefits in students’learning process. Of equally importance, instructors should pay attention to theselection of reading material for training students’ reading strategies. Interest isalways the catalyst for efficient learning. Attractive reading materials should becarefully chosen and complied to complement the abstract learning of readingstrategies. Based on an action research, the paper investigates the adoption of readingstrategies among junior high school students. From the research, the students’ readingstrategies are first being trained, then their changes are assessed in terms of readingperformance before and after training.Methodologies of the research include pre-test and post-test assessment,questionnaire survey, and interviews. Students from a junior high school inChangchun city are selected to complete the research. The findings of the researchindicate:1) English newspaper as a supplementary learning material stimulatesstudents’ interest in English learning;2) significant difference exists among studentswith different learning backgrounds;3) the training of cognitive strategies has moreostensible effects on junior high school students’ reading ability. Generally speaking,meta-cognitive strategies are more easily to grasp, and thus reaps the most benefits.
