The textbooks in daily teaching activities of schools play an important role,Itserves as the main carrier of knowledge between teachers and students, whichconveys information on national politics, traditions and etc. The significant impact oftextbook on future generations informs researchers in education that textbook need tobe extensively studied with respect to the structure arrangement and content selection.This paper focuses on American elementary textbook, based on McGraw-Hill’sreading textbooks Treasures as a special case. Specifically, this paper gains an insightof American textbook structures and the forming background by examining andanalyzing the structure arrangements and content selection. This will be discussed infollowing six sections:Introduction: This section introduces the research background, motivations andmethodologies. In addition, the introduction part presents the rationality andrepresentativeness of research objects selection. Meanwhile, the research methods (i.e.content analysis) is also briefly introduced.The First Part: This section interprets the key concepts related to research topicsand presents an literature reviews on this topic.The Second Part: This part introduces the the historical reasons and providesconcrete background support for this research by analyzing the American elementaryschool language curriculum and reading textbook development.The Third Part: It analyzes the structures in Treasures by analyzing both theoverall structure and structure in unit modules, which provides more insights of thecompiling and writing criteria of American reading textbooks.The Fourth Part: This part is mainly focusing on the text content of Treasures byanalyzing the genre and topics. The statistic results of content characteristics areobtained after the analysis.Conclusion: It concludes the outcomes of this research and also provides somesuggestions for future development and research based on the research conclusion andexisting inadequacies in current reading textbooks.
