In the background of macro institutional and economic change of China, this paper focuses on people working within work-unit system. Using data from Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS)2008, this paper establishes binary logistic regression and multiple logistic regression models to examine the relationship of individual factors and occupational attainment&mobility from the theoretical view of occupational attainment. Also, this paper compares the influence of individual factor in different historical period, as well as comparing the influences in party and government organization, state-owned enterprise and public institution.Firstly, this paper analyses the influence of education on occupational attainment and mobility. Statistical findings show that:the location of school has a significant influence on occupational attainment and the influence increases with time. Educational requirement in party and government organization is higher than in state-owned enterprise. Analysis also shows that both educational requirement and vocational education experience have significant influences on upward mobility.Secondly, this paper examines the influence of political identity on occupational attainment and mobility. Statistical findings reveal that communist party membership has a significant influence on occupational attainment within the system, and the influence is more significant after the reform than before, in party and government organization than in state-owned enterprise or public institution. Analysis also shows that both party membership and party standing significantly influence upward mobility within the system.Thirdly, this paper investigates the influence of profession experience on occupational attainment and mobility. Statistical analysis finds that previous formal working experience has a positive correlation with occupational attainment, while working outside the system enjoys a negative correlation with it. In party and government organization, working years has a more significant influence than in state-owned enterprise. Statistical finding also shows that both previous formal working experience and the times of position change have significant influences on upward mobility.Fourthly, this paper analyses the influence of all individual factors on occupational attainment and mobility within the work-unit system. Using stepwise logistic regression model, this paper finds the main influence factors, and confirms the significant influence of education, political membership and profession experience. Finally, based on the research conclusion, this paper further explains the influence of different individual factor, responds market transition theory and institutionalism perspective; and further discusses the influence of market transition on social stratification.
