Purpose:To understand the connections between the energy consumption and related factors bymeasuring the energy consumption of going up and down the stairs of the middle and youngpeople. Methods: Using indirect energy measurement, we selected90young and middle-aged peopleand measured energy consumption of ascending and descending the stairs.Results:1.Going up anddown the stairs with100strides/min stride frequency, there is significant difference in energyconsumption for the people with different genders and weights(P<0.01). With this stridefrequency, energy consumption increases with the increase of weight and oxygen uptake for male ismuch more than that for female(P<0.01).2.There is linearity connection between relative oxygenuptake and heat rate(R=0.9882,P<0.01)at the rate of90-150times/min.3.The metabolic equivalentis7.99-8.30METs/min and the heart rate is134-139times/min during the process of going upstairs. The total energy consumption is27.95-29.02kcal/min. And during the process of going downstairs, the metabolic equivalent is3.56-3.75METs/min and the heart rate is109-114times/min. The totalenergy consumption is3.90-4.20kcal/min.Conclusions:1.Energy consumption differs distinctly inweight and gender.2.There is linearity connection between energy consumption and stature,BMI andFFM.3.Linearity connection exists between heart rate and relative oxygen uptake.4.This studyreveals the rate of energy consumption of going up and down the stairs is2.23:1.
