Purpose: Measuring and studying the indicators of energy expenditure of climbing stairs for young men with different BMI(normal and overweight).Comparing the differences of energy metabolism between different BMI groups with same load and the energy metabolism of the same group with different load.Exploring the characteristics of the energy expenditure of climbing stairs with load in young men with different BMI,encouraging the public to take more stairs instead of elevators in daily life, and minimizing sedentary time, then working and living in a healthier way. Methods: The subjects were divided into overweight group(n = 12)and normal weight group(n=12)according to BMI.The rest energy expenditure and the energy expenditure of climbing stairs were measured by Cortex MetaMax 3B portable gas metabolic analyzer. The load of climbing stairs included: 0kg,1kg,2kg,3kg,4kg and 5kg.The form of load was backpack.Based on the oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide exhalation at each stage, the energy expenditure during climbing stairs with load or without load were calculated.Result:(1)There were significant differences in unit weight energy expenditure and unit weight net energy expenditure between normal weight group and overweight group during climbing up stairs with loads of 4kg and 5kg(P< 0.05),there were significant differences in unit weight energy expenditure between normal weight group and overweight group during climbing down stairs with loads of 4kg and 5kg(P<0.05),the normal weight group was higher than overweight group.(2)In normal weight group, the energy expenditures during climbing up stairs with loads of 4kg and 5kg were significantly greater than without load(P<0.05).In overweight group, the energy expenditure during climbing up stairs with a load of 5kg was significantly greater than without load(P<0.05).(3)The unit weight net energy expenditures during climbing up stairs load with 4kg in normal weight group and load with 3kg in overweight group were significantly higher than without load and load with 1kg(P<0.05,P<0.01).(4)When climbing up stairs with same load, the energy metabolism indexes in both normal weight group and overweight group were greater than those of climping down stairs. The energy expenditure of climping up stairs of normal weight group was about 60% higher than that of climping down stairs, and overweight group was about 50% higher.Conclusions:(1)When climbing stairs with a large daily load(4kg and 5kg),the unit weight net energy expenditure in normal weight people was higher than overweight people. The load causing an increase in energy expenditure of overweight people were greater than normal weight people.(2)In daily life, normal weight people climbed up stairs with larger load(4kg and 5kg),overweight people climbed up stairs with moderate load(3kg),which were beneficial to increase energy expenditure, maintain or control weight.(3)The energy expenditure of climping up stairs with same load in normal weight people was about 60% higher than that of climping down stairs, while overweight people was about 50% higher.
