The great changes of economic system transition and social transformation havetaken place in all aspects of our society over thirty years since China’s reform andopening up. This ethnography fully shows the residents’ daily life of Shimen. We cancapture ‘individualization’ as the point of age characteristic through daily life. It’shard to define ‘individualization’ if we don’t do historical comparison or think aboutthe differences between tradition and modern. Interpretive understanding has playedan important role as methodology in the fields and in ethnographic writing. Theresearcher is able to feel that economy is in the core position in residents’ daily life,the individual escapes out of the bondage of traditional ties for freedom. But focusingon individualization leads to ignoring public domain and public norms. |
