The classification of knowledge is due to the limitations of human cognition, theclassification did promote the development of disciplines and scientific research. However,with the development of society and science, the research carried out by a singlediscipline cannot meet the actual needs, then distantly related interdisciplinary researcharose. The emergence of distantly related interdisciplinary research was not only in linewith the logic of the development of science,but also met the practical needs of society.Distantly related interdisciplinary research has an important significance to thedevelopment of a university. In the history of Huazhong University of Science andTechnology, the Humanities and Social Sciences developed characteristically by taking theadvantages of science and engineering, which made certain achievements and caused asignificant reaction. Then how does the distantly related interdisciplinary research inHuazhong University of Science and Technology develop? Are there some shortcomings?How to improve it? The study intends to solve the problems.This study selected six research universities such as Peking University, TsinghuaUniversity, as comparison objects of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Wescreened seven universities’ published papers over the past decade, the total number andthe total frequencies of distantly related interdisciplinary research papers of HuazhongUniversity of Science and Technology are153and168, which are in the lower level of theseven universities. Based on the data, we built the seven universities’ social networkdiagram, and calculated the network density, centrality, and the average distance betweennodes. We sorted the results, the network density of Huazhong University of Science andTechnology is0.1267, the average distance between the nodes of2.706, which are both inthe sixth. So the conclusion is that the development of distantly related interdisciplinaryresearch in Huazhong University of Science and Technology is in the lower level of theseven universities. The network density is lower than several universities; the averagedistance between network nodes is a little long. We can also find there are a few highcentrality nodes in the network, and the stability of the network is poor. On this basis, we chose the three universities which have higher network density assample; the three universities are Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and FudanUniversity. The three universities have some policies to support distantly relatedinterdisciplinary research from the organization, funding and personnel. And they activelybuilt some scientific research platform to promote distantly related interdisciplinaryresearch. The Huazhong University of Science and Technology does not well in theseaspects. In view of this, the study proposed the corresponding countermeasures to promotethe development of distantly related interdisciplinary research in Huazhong University ofScience and Technology from school policy support and research platform building.
