Academy has become a significant supplement to government teaching institutions gradually since it has emerged during the Tang Dynasty, which played a momentous function in our country’s history. Office-oriented education was on the raise while the academy losing it’s tradition of delivering lectures freely during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The education reform was imperative due to the academy was on the way to decay. Meanwhile, due to the confronting problems such as funds, teachers, transforming the original academy became the most important step in modern education system reform. This was the movement that named as the reformation of academy—turning the academies into modern institute.The reformation of academy was carried out successively nationwide. The reformation stage was varied from province to province due to the different situations among different provinces. Taking Shanxi Province as the research object, this paper discussed the reformation status of Shanxi Province in late Qing Dynasty.In modern China, the situation of Shanxi is unique. The impact brought by the church school onto its old education, the subscription from Shanxi Jin merchants, the existing old and new factors within the system which facilitate the reformation, providing a better condition than any other province.Grand Coordinator ZhangZhidong and HuPinzhi had grate influence on Shanxi’s education in the course of the educational modernization in Shanxi province. We can see the situation of the alternation educational transformation from the old to the new in Shanxi from the modern academy—LingDengTang built by ZhangZhidong, and then the rebuilt towards it conducted by HuPinzhi. And also reflect the accommodation function and the tendence towards the modern of academy itself.The transformation of academy of Shanxi province in late Qing Dynasty was conducted in the setting of the whole country which experienced quite a difficult procedure including the decline of academy, the build of new academy, and the build of modern school. While the schools set for the primary and middle school were rebuilt based on the ancient academy, and most of the colleges and universities were newly build which formed the basic modern educational system of Shanxi province. This thesis revealed the problems and the function brought by the students, tutors, and all the other aspects involved in this processa at that time and the influence on the modem history brought by them through elaborating all kinds schools and the charts. And the author analyzed the influence towards the modern history of Shanxi province.The last part of this thesis made a primitive discussion towards the spirits and modern educational value of academy. This thesis revealed the referential and enlightening functions of the academy reformation in Shanxi province through studying the elaboration on the educational value and shortcomings of modern education system made by famous experts.
