Taking Guangzhou city zone of late Qing dynasty as geographic scope, this papercarries out a review on the history of the evolution of Guangzhou academy and therising of school from 1895 to 1911, and tries to draw the outline of the forepartmodernization of Guangzhou school education from their background, process andinflue(?).paper is divided into three parts. In part one, the economic, political andcultural background of the evolution of Guangzhou academy and the rising of school isanalyzed. Economically, the rising of modern industry and commerce was in urgentneed of new talents. However, huge debt apportion caused the shortage of outlays andtherefore, insufficient outlay support was given to education. Politically, the governmentcouldn't handle domestic trouble and foreign invasion, and thoughts of reforming andrevolution came into being at almost the same time in Guangzhou. Culturally andeducationally, western learning started while bureaucratization of Guanzhou academyand the vogue of imperial examination system became more and more serious.In part two, emphasis is laid on the process of the evolution of Guangzhouacademy and the origination of school. This paper divides the process of schoolreplacing academy into three stages. Stage one was brewing stage for the reform ofacademy (1895 to 1898). Due to the pertinacity and fogyism of bureaucracy and theweakness of new intellectual, the brewing for reform was not thorough. Stage two wasthe period of the abolishment of academy and of the rising of school (1898 to 1905).During that period, most of academy in Guangzhou was abolished. However, theconstruction of school was not so satisfactory. Stage three was an improving period forschool education in Guangzhou (1905 to 1911). With the abolishment of imperialexamination system and the recognition of new education by the official and ordinarypeople, school education was solidified and perfected step by step.At the end, the paper carries out an appraisal on the evolution of the academy andthe rising of school in Guangzhou from positive influence and its shortcoming, andcomes to the conclusion that they enhanced the forepart modernization of Guangzhouschool education, and the spread of modern science in Guangzhou and the opening upof thought of people. On the other hand, the transitional process of old education tonew one in Guangzhou was quite in chaos and slow, and did not completely broughtalong the educational reform of Guangdong province.
