Objective and MethodKangba area is one of the important areas where the Tibetan people inhabit. In themeantime, the people of the Han nationality as well as Naxi, Qiang, Lisu, Hui, Yi andother ethnic minorities are living there together in harmony and interaction, thuscreating the colorful Kangba culture. Based on the diversified cultures of minorities inWest Sichuan, this paper takes the historical, social and national cultures as the startingpoint, collecting the literature about religious studies, ethnology, sociology, culturologyas well as the sports development of minorities. Along the main line of“constitution-development-transition” of the traditional sports cultures, this papersystematically explains the cultural origin, forms of activities, current developmentstatus of the traditional sports cultures of Tibetan people, based on the field visit inKangding County and Yajiang County in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, WestSichuan, in order to look into the value, esthetics and national culture identity, etc. in thedevelopment of traditional sports culture in minorities.Conclusions1. As a multi-dimensional structure of the national culture, the traditional sportsculture of Kangba Tibetan people is the aggregation of tangible and intangible resultsformed by the existence and development of Tibetan people, which exist betweenpeople and nature, people and society and people and people. The characteristictraditional sports culture of Tibetan people of Kangba, West Sichuan, is created by thelong history, glorious civilization, magnificent landscape, simple but zealous customand fearless Cesar spirit, together.2. The traditional sports culture of Tibetan people living in Kangba, West Sichuan,is classified as the material culture, behavioral culture, institutional culture and spiritualculture, for dimensions in all. The coupling of the material culture of traditional sportsof Kangba Tibetan people has been created since ancient times, inheriting the traditionalsports of these people in terms of materials, according to the organization andexcavation of archaeological material. It is found from the interview and investigationin Yajiang County, Kangding County and so on that the spiritual core of Kangba Tibetanpeople’s traditional sports cultures is originated from people’s worship to the nature andgods, common religious belief as well as admiration and imitation to the national hero,i.e. King Cesar.3. There’s a distinct geographical environmental feature and unique humanistic culture in the living environment of the Tibetan people of Kangba, West Sichuan. Thecultural function of the traditional sports culture of Kangba Tibetan people lies in theirpursuit of balanced nature as well as their practice of syncretism between heaven andman. Kangba Tibetan people living in West Sichuan, though having many differentliving and producing methods compared with Han people, have the ethnic identity andnational pride passed down in the traditional national sports activities. This identity isdisplayed in the traditional sports participated by the mass, such as the GuozhuangDance, Yak Race and Yajia.4. The author proposes the strategy to inherit and protect the good national culturesin three perspectives, i.e. non-material cultural heritage, living pattern and culturalcapital, in hope of providing some advice to better explore and organize the traditionalsports of Tibetan people as well as objective evidence to develop traditional Tibetansports in harmony with the modern sports under a new social background.
