In the past few decades, the trend of informatization and globalization hasfastened in worldwide, which also brought great demands for qualified practicalEnglish talents in all aspects, especially talents with ability of life-long study.However, we must face the fact that current English teaching in vocational schoolscan not meet the demands and urgent needs in reality. Therefore it is a key target howto develop students’ abilities of autonomous learning English. In such circumstances,any efforts to explore approaches to fulfill the target are worthwhile and appreciated.This thesis is an action research carried out by the author himself with goodintention of locating some practical ways to help students to set up their confidence,improve their English learning proficiency and promote their competence ofautonomous English learning. The research revolves around problems encountered inthe teaching process, especially students’ passive attitude towards English learning,their own learning methods and their dependence on the teacher. The research lasts for15weeks, and48students who enrolled in the autumn of2009in ChangAnVocational School were taken as the subjects. The author adopted varieties ofmethods, such as questionnaires and interviews, to record and analyze the data aboutstudents’ autonomy in English learning and a teaching pattern called “four-stepteaching” to carry on activities in class.During the research, the author makes a detailed description of teaching activitiesdesigned in class, guidance of learning strategies and many teaching cases to expressthe practical implementation together with the author’s constant reflections on theteaching efficiency and correspondent adjustments of his teaching. During the processof communication and interaction, students and the teacher both have achieved muchfrom each other. At the same time some new problems identified would be the focusof the further research.
