In recent years, autonomous learning has become the trend of English teachingreform in middle school. The New Curriculum Reform and the New Standard ofNational English Curriculum hold that we should change the way the students learnand cultivate students into the autonomous learners. In the field research of L middleschool, the author mainly discusses how to develop students’ autonomous learningability by improving English teaching model.Based on the theories of autonomous learning and related applications researches, especially Dulangkou "336" model, the author puts forward the English autonomouslearning teaching model "one portfolio and three phases", which includes "Englishlearning portfolio" as a learning instrument, and "preview formation, corporationdisplay, detection feedback" as three learning phases.Furthermore, the author investigates the effectiveness of the new model toimprove students’ autonomous learning through experimental research. Two classesof grade seven in L junior school are assigned as the experimental class and thecontrol class respectively. The "one portfolio and three phases" model is conducted inthe experimental class while traditional model is implemented in the latter one. Theauthor investigates the change of students’ English autonomous learning through thequestionnaire research and observational method. In addition, the author exploreswhat the new model impacts on student’s achievements in English learning byanalyzing the data of the pretest and the posttest. In the final analysis, the autonomous English learning ability of the students ofthe experimental class is superior to that of the control class. The model drives thestudents into identifying themselves with English class, and cultivates students’abilities of self-planning, self-monitoring and self-evaluation. However, the newmodel hasn’t reflected the effect on improving students’ achievement in Englishlearning due to the experimental period. Nevertheless, the author takes it that the newmodel would improve students’ achievement if it is implemented for a long period.
