Preview before English class is an activity of autonomous learning before teachers’instruction in class that students learn the new contents in advance to serve for theirEnglish learning in class. With the deepening of teaching reform, the focus of Englishclass has been transferred from “teaching” to “learning”, from passive learning to activelearning in order to cultivate students’ autonomous learning abilities. The newcurriculum also emphasizes that students should master autonomous learning so thatthey are able to set targets and get ready for their study on their own. Preview, anactivity of autonomous learning, has received much attention and general approval inpractice these days, especially for the preview before English class. But according to thecorrelational studies of many experts and scholars at home and abroad, we can findmany problems which need to be solved in preview before English class.There are two research questions in this study as follows: first, what is students’overall situation of preview before English class? The author will analyze from theaspects of attitudes, contents, strength, reasons, difficulties and teachers’ generalguidance of preview before English class. Second, what are the performances ofdifferent achievers in preview before English class? The author divides the students intohigh, middle, and low achievers based on their English scores to analyze from the firstfive aspects as mentioned above. To discuss these two research questions, the authorapplies the methods of questionnaire and interview to investigate300students in gradeeight and30English teachers in a common junior high school. The purpose is to findout problems, analyze them and make some suggestions through the collection of dataand information of the current situation of preview before English class in junior highschools.According to the research questions, the author analyzes the data fromquestionnaires and information from interviews. Based on the first research question, interms of attitudes towards preview,57.67%of the students have quite positive attitudes to preview before English class.55.67%of the students improve their scores throughpreview to various degrees; according to the strength of preview,51.66%of the studentsspend more than15minutes on preview before English class every time.60.33%of thestudents don’t often preview; according to the difficulties in the preview,99%of thestudents have difficulties in the process of preview before English class and can solvesome of the difficulties to various degrees. Based on the second research, in terms ofattitudes towards preview,53high achievers are very positive to preview,45middleachievers are positive, and48low achievers are negative to preview before Englishclass; as for the roles of preview in achieving scores,91high achievers have quite highimprovement degrees,54middle achievers have quite high improvement degrees,68low achievers have low improvement degrees of English scores through preview beforeEnglish class; according to the strength of preview,68high achievers preview for morethan15minutes and85of them preview English often.62middle achievers preview formore than15minutes and61of them preview English occasionally.52low achieversjust preview English for about15minutes and68of them preview English occasionally;about the difficulties in the preview,85high achievers have only a few difficulties,73middle achievers have quite many difficulties,93low achievers have quite manydifficulties; about the solution degrees to the difficulties,93high achievers can solvemore than half of their difficulties,78middle achievers solve more than half of theirdifficulties, and25low achievers can solve less than half of their difficulties. On thebasis of the data above, the author finds out that students have many common problemsin preview before English class and there are big gaps among different achievers of theirpreview before English class. At last, the author accordingly put forwards somesuggestions to help teachers solve students’ common problems and close the gapsamong different achievers of preview so as to improve their levels of English learningand their English scores.
