Objective: With popularization of Internet and development of colleges anduniversities, Internet surfing becomes a new way of life and learning but Internetaddiction also emerges among college students. This study explores college studentsInternet addiction (IAD) and its relevance with family system and function withquestionnaire and semi-structured interview.Methods: Between March and April2012, one university in Beijing launched asurvey with random cluster sampling803undergraduates and recycling749validquestionnaires with the Young Internet addiction scale for assessment of diagnosisstandard and family function (FAD). Five Internet addicts were selected to attendsemi-structured interview.Results:(1) IAD rate among college students was5.1%; College students Internetaddiction group shows significant difference to non-addiction group not in gender,grade, being-an-only but in frequency, motivation, usage, etc.(2) With data analysis and interviews, we find that formation for Internet addictionof college students has certain link to specific family function dimension.College students Internet addiction group has no significant differences in problemsolving dimension. Problem solving model in surveyed addicts’ families is a decisionparents, who arrange to make a decision in respondent development phenomenon.Internet addiction group show no significant difference in communication dimensionsbut respondents’ families were more pronounced in transactional communication andrespondents avoid communication with their parents in emotional problems. Collegestudents Internet addiction group in the role is not unhealthy addiction group.Respondents in the family roles is unitary, mainly is to learn.(3) According to analysis into family system theory, due to particularity of familysystem, students interviewed maintain and balance their unhealthy families or transfer inherent contradictions in their families by developing Internet addiction, whichbecomes the way of family contradiction resolving.Conclusions: College students Internet addiction group is unhealthy in emotiondimension. Respondents family emotional reactions are closely and alienation innumber two; more negative emotions and less positive emotions in term of quality.College students Internet addiction group is not healthy in emotional involvementdimension. Emotional involvement in respondent family is extended in an unhealthyway-not involved in, self-centered type involved, excessive involvement in andsymbiotic. The dimension of network addiction has a role in prediction.College students Internet addiction group are unhealthy in the behavior controldimensions. Behavior control mode in respondent family is the fair type and severe type,which are not healthy. The dimension of college students forming has certain predictioneffect on Internet addiction.College students Internet addiction group are unhealthy in total functionaldimensions. Respondents family can maintain a family on transactional work, cannotoperate well in terms of emotional problems. Several conflicts in family are relationsbetween husband and wife, family violence, don’t accept, can’t get along with eachother.
