High-quality teachers are critical to the quality of education. Since2001, theimplementation of the new curriculum has put forward higher requirements for teachers’professional qualities. As we know, China is an agricultural country, so the basic education inrural regions plays an important part in the whole nation’s education system. However, ruraleducation of our country still can’t satisfy the needs of social development. English teachingin rural primary school of minority areas is still falling behind; the importance of ruralEnglish teachers’ professional development is still not paid enough attention. Therefore, it isnecessary to focus on the investigation into the rural primary school in minority areas Englishteachers’ professional development.The study aims to investigate the present condition of English teachers’ professionaldevelopment in rural primary schools of minority areas. The study instruments includequestionnaires and literature. The subjects of the study include9English teachers in8ruralprimary schools of Chiling and Huxi in Zhangpu county.Through the data analysis, this study holds that rural English teachers’ professionaldevelopment in minority can’t meet the need of social development. The main problems intheir professional development include: the unreasonable structure and poor stability ofteacher staff, lack of awareness for self development, weakness of professional knowledgeand teaching skill. In addition, this study holds that the reasons lie in personal factor andsocial factor.
